Legalities

What are the legalities?   It’s not difficult but there are some basic things that the Law requires.  I’ve listed the details here but don’t stress! I will explain all this to you when we speak.

The first step is the filling out of the NOTICE OF INTENDED MARRIAGE FORM. (REFERRED TO AS THE ‘NIM’). This form is required by law to be to be signed, witnessed and lodged with me one month and one day before the intended date of the ceremony. The applicable original supporting documents, as listed below will be needed to complete this notice.

When we meet, I will provide this form and we will fill it out together.  I will witness your signatures and verify your documentation prior to the lodgment of your NIM. Completing all the legal requirements at our first meeting will allow you and your partner more time to enjoy the lead up to your special day.

If we cannot meet, before the notice date, the NIM can be downloaded from www.ag.gov.au/celebrants , signed and witnessed by a prescribed person as listed on the form and posted or faxed to me, together with photo copies of the required documents.  However, I will still need the original NIM and to sight all original documents before the ceremony can commence.

Looks complicated??

No, not really, but by deciding that I am the Celebrant for you, I can do it all on the computer quickly and simply and we can then concentrate on those special words that will make the ceremony on your wedding day uniquely yours. .

When we meet, make sure to bring;

  • your original birth certificates (or original extracts)
  • The original Decree Absolute (proof of divorce) in the case of a previous marriage.
  • The original death certificate in the case of the death of a previous spouse.
  • The original death certificate is required.
  • your passports (if you are visiting from overseas)
